LEE FOWLER’S prediction did turn out to be correct as Flint Town United secured their first top flight triumph of the campaign.
The manager tipped Elliott Reeves to grab a couple of goals at Aberystwyth Town and the striker duly did so to confirm Flint’s 2-0 triumph.
Reeves, now back from injury, handed the Silkmen the lead 10 minutes shy of the interval and he doubled the advantage six minutes into the second half.
After his two-goal haul, Reeves told S4C’s Sgorio: “It was a tough battle today, especially on the surface.
“It’s been frustrating the last sort of five-and-a-half weeks being out and probably even more frustrating for the lads on the pitch, you know, who are grinding away and not getting the results, but playing really well in areas and hopefully we can use this result to kick on and get some more points on the board, because that’s what we’re here for.”
Flint took the lead in the 34th minute. The ball was switched out to the left and after beating a defender, Ben Wynne got a shot away. Reeves showed great presence of mind to get across and flick the ball beyond Dave Jones in the Aber goal.
There was double delight for Reeves - and the Silkmen - in the 51st minute.
Frankie Ealing tried to run the ball out of defence, but got robbed by the alert Hughes, who in turn found Florian Yonsian on the left.
He delivered a fine ball into the path of the incoming Reeves, whose shot went into the net.
Jake Phillips said: “We have been performing, but unfortunately we haven’t picked up the points we possibly deserved in other games.
“If we look back at last week, it was very disappointing losing that game from the position we were in and we weren’t going to let that happen again today.
“So, it was important going in at half-time, keeping our heads and once we got the second goal, we had more of a hold on the game, I felt, and a very important three points to, hopefully, start the season off now.”
Penybont sit at the top of the standings following their 2-0 home victory versus Caernarfon Town.
Goals from Keyon Reffell and Clayton Green maintained Penybont’s unbeaten start.
Second-placed Cardiff Met triumphed 1-0 at Bala Town courtesy of Eliot Evans’ first half strike and this was also the scoreline as The New Saints got the better of Haverfordwest County. Adrian Cieslewicz (pictured right) netted midway through the first half for Craig Harrison’s defending champions.
Harrison told TNS TV: “I thought it was a fantastic away performance.
“Really, probably, the game should have been out of sight at half-time. You know, we’ve had four really good chances, scored one of them and we should have made it a little bit easier for ourselves for the last 10, 15 minutes.
“We’ve had some good chances second half as well, got in great areas and just not quite finished them off.”
Elsewhere, Aaron Williams’ second half effort confirmed Newtown’s 1-0 win at home to Briton Ferry Llansawel, who are still seeking their first point.
