MAX CLEWORTH knows there will be highs and lows during Wrexham's return to League One but the centre-back is going to savour the good times as Wrexham aim to maintain the unbeaten start to the season against arch rivals Shrewsbury Town in the cross-border derby at The Racecourse tomorrow.
Last Saturday's brilliant 2-0 win at Peterborough United made it 10 points from the opening four games and took the Reds up to second in the table.
With most of the games in the division postponed due to international call-ups, if Wrexham avoid defeat against The Shrews, the Reds would take over as leaders from Stockport County who are one of the sides not in action.
Cleworth, who is looking good alongside Eoghan O’Connell and Tom O’Connor in the Reds backline, is not getting carried away by the fantastic start.
But the in-form defender is enjoying being part of a Wrexham side that has hit the ground running and adjusted well to life at a higher level.
"We knew it wasn't going to be an easy challenge in League One but we are loving and relishing every minute," said the centre-back, who scored his second goal of the season in the win against Peterborough at London Road.
"We are not stupid, we know there are going to be downs during the season as well as ups but you have to enjoy the good moments.
"And when there is a bad moment, learn from it and move on as a team.
"No matter what happens this season, we have got a good togetherness; through the highs and lows, we always stick together so long may that continue.
"We knew it was going to be a tough start and there are many more tough challenges to come but we will look forward to them."
Shrewsbury will aim to end Wrexham's flying start and although it promises to be a pulsating derby between the rivals, Cleworth is treating it as just another game.
"It should be a fiery one but it is just another league game and another chance for three points," he said.
"It sounds boring but that's the way it is. We let the noise go on around us.
"A bit of needle will happen but we won't approach Shrewsbury any different."
Wrexham, then challenging for promotion from League Two, won 1-0 at Shrewbury when the teams met in the third round of the FA Cup in January with Tom O'Connor scoring the only goal.
"If we could replicate that it wouldn't be a bad thing so we will prepare for Shrewsbury this week and see what happens," added Cleworth.
"Last season we took a lot of fans to their place and made it a top atmosphere, and I'm sure they are going to bring a few to ours.
"But we will keep level-headed and do our stuff on the pitch."
