THE transfer window is shut but looking back at Wrexham’s past, here’s a top 10 of money signings who made names for themselves at The Racecourse.

ANDY MARRIOTT: Wrexham reportedly paid £200,000 for the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper so he would surpass Joey Jones as the Reds’ record signing.

TONY HUMES: Moved from Ipswich Town for a cut-price £40,000 and turned out to be one of Wrexham’s most inspirational captains of all-time.

JOEY JONES: Just three years after moving to Liverpool for £110,000, Joey returned to Wrexham for a club record £210,00 fee in 1978.

SCOTT GREEN: Another key signing, who helped get Wrexham over the promotion line under Denis Smith in 2003. Green came in for just £10,000 from Bolton.

ARFON GRIFFITHS: Another club legend to return to the club for £3,000 less than Arsenal paid out in 1961. Griffiths has made more appearances than any other player in Wrexham’s history – 721 in total - and he was also player manager of Wrexham’s greatest ever 1977/78 double-winning side.

MIKE LAKE: Brian Flynn forked out £60,000 for the Sheffield United midfielder in 1993 and he was key to Wrexham’s promotion season that year.

MEL SUTTON: £18,000 in 1972 was a lot of money but the all action midfielder was well worth the fee John Neal paid Cardiff City. Sutton went on to make 471 appearances for the Reds.

BOBBY SHINTON: Another steal for John Neal who paid Cambridge United only £15,000 for a crowd-pleaser, who had every Wrexham fan in the late 70s on the edge of their seats.

DIXIE MCNEIL: Arrived from Hereford United for just £66,000 in 1977, scored on his debut and became a legend at Wrexham as a player, manager and now club president.

KEVIN RUSSELL: The fee for ‘Rooster’ was never ever disclosed as he arrived in a swap deal that saw Barry Horne move to Portsmouth for £70,000.

Russell was a goal-scoring speed merchant, netting 43 goals in 84 appearances before signing for Leicester City. He returned to Wrexham in 1995 and made another 200 appearances before becoming Denis Smith’s assistant manager.
