MAX CLEWORTH wanted to improve his goal return and the centre-back hopes to continue finding the back of the net throughout the season.

The 22-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at The Racecourse, scored his first league goal for the club in the 2-1 League Two victory at Colchester United in April and Wrexham went onto secure a second promotion in a row.

With the Reds lining up in League One, Cleworth got on the scoresheet in the opening day 3-2 win at home to Wycombe Wanderers and he also found the back of the net with a header from Tom O'Connor's corner in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Peterborough United as Phil Parkinson's men maintained the unbeaten start to the season.

That means Cleworth - previously on target in a 5-0 win against Gloucester City in an FA Trophy tie in December 2021 - has scored three goals in his last nine games and the defender is pleased to be finding form in the opposition penalty area.

"It's a good feeling to score," said Cleworth. "My ratio has been a bit poor over the last few years.

"Maybe that is down to me or having a slightly different role when attacking corners. Maybe I have got a bit more belief and bit more freedom to attack corners now.

"It is something I probably needed to improve in my game but it is only two goals this season and I need to try and do more.

"I had a chance at Bolton which I probably should have done better with.

"But I seem to have got the knack a bit and managed to get my head on the end of it at Peterborough.

"I am obviously delighted and hopefully there are a few more to come this season."

With two goals to his name this season, Cleworth is now joint top scorer with Jack Marriott who opened the scoring at Peterborough.

Wrexham, unbeaten after four games and up to second in the table with 10 points from a possible 12, have shared the goals out so far and Cleworth says it's everyone's duty to try and chip in.

"It doesn't matter who scores as long as someone is scoring to help us win games which is all that really matters," he said.

"The strikers are there to score but it is about the service to them and it is important that everyone contributes.

"Our strikers' record over the last few years has been phenomenal but if we can get goals from all areas, that is only going to help us."

Marriott and Cleworth struck in the first half at London Road and resolute defending limited the Posh to few chances after the break.

"We frustrated Peterborough for large parts," added Cleworth.

"They are a very good team with some very good players that we knew we had to take care of, and we did that.

"It's only one win so let's keep going."
