THERE have been some set-backs along the way despite Wrexham enjoying a fantastic season and Phil Parkinson says the togetherness in the squad has helped the Reds overcome adversity.

Saturday’s 2-1 win at Bromley enabled Wrexham to open up a three point lead at the top of the National League and they also have a game in hand on Notts County.

With eight matches remaining, the Reds are in pole position to land the title but it has been far from plain-sailing.

Parkinson has lost key players at various stages of the campaign and is set to be without Rob Lainton for the run-in after the goalkeeper sustained knee ligament damage against Bromley.

Injuries are part of football but the Reds’ boss hailed the way his players have reacted to any bumps in the road, with his side currently on a 26-game unbeaten league run.

“You look at the season and we have needed the squad because we have had a few problems along the way,” said Parkinson.

“It has made us stronger as a group.

“We have got that mentality that nothing is going to stand in our way.

“Going to play on the 4G pitch at Bromley, there was a no excuse policy; just complete focus on what we had to do and we will continue to do that, starting this weekend at home to York.”

Parkinson feels the FA Cup fourth round tie against Sheffield United in January was a classic example of how Wrexham refuse to let obstacles stand in their way.

The Reds were 1-0 down and saw centre-backs Jordan Tunnicliffe and Aaron Hayden limp off injured inside the opening 10 minutes but the Reds hit back to lead 2-1 and 3-2 before the Championship high-fliers grabbed an injury time equaliser to draw 3-3.

“That game encapsulated what we are all about,” added Parkinson. “A goal down and two players off early on, but the lads pulled together and became stronger as a unit.

“That is what we have done all season.

“We have now lost Rob but that tightens the group up again, and we are ready for the next challenge which is York.”
