ANDY WOODMAN doesn’t want Wrexham to win promotion because he thinks the Reds have been “brilliant” for the National League.

Saturday’s 2-1 win at Bromley - managed by Woodman - keeps Phil Parkinson’s side in pole position for the title.

Currently spending a 15th season in the fifth tier where Wrexham have always been one of the biggest clubs, the Racecourse outfit has received even more publicity since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their high-profile takeover in February 2021.

Woodman believes that has helped put the National League in the spotlight and with Wrexham attracting bumper crowds both home and away, Bromley had a modern day record attendance when more than 5,000 spectators descended on Hayes Lane for Saturday’s clash.

Although he would love Wrexham to remain in the division next season because they bring so much to the table, Woodman, who led Bromley to a 1-0 victory over the Reds in last May’s FA Trophy final at Wembley, would be happy for friend Parkinson if his side clinched automatic promotion.

“I don’t want Wrexham to go out of this league,” said Woodman.

“Wrexham fans will hate me for that but I think they have been brilliant for this league.

“Their support, the magnitude of the club, the razzmatazz has been brilliant.

“I think it is a brilliant story and I am proud to be a part of it; I have been on the right side of it once but too many times of late I have been on the wrong side of it!

“I for one will really miss this fixture if Wrexham go up, I really look forward to it.

“Phil is a friend of mine so I want Wrexham to go up but I will be sorry to lose the spotlight they have put on the league.

“We had our record crowd and would we have got that if Wrexham hadn’t come to town? No chance, so we have got a lot to be thankful to Wrexham for.

“Anyone that wishes bad on a club and a town like Wrexham is not a real football fan.”

Wrexham are battling it out with Notts County for automatic promotion.

Bromley, who took the lead against the Reds at The Racecourse before losing 2-1 in January’s fixture, were also 1-0 up at home to County a fortnight ago but conceded a stoppage time equaliser.

Woodman feels his side have given a good account of themselves against the title rivals.

“They are two big juggernauts of a club going into the last bit of the season and we have pushed both teams really closely," he added.

“I am sure Phil was gutted we threw it away at the end against Notts County.

“We had moments where we made a couple of errors against Wrexham and you can’t do that against the quality they’ve got but I thought my young team were brilliant.

“In the first game, I think we brought 32 fans to Wrexham in a crowd of 9-10,000 and we had a go.”
