THE players have had a chance to recharge the batteries and Eoghan O’Connell wants title-chasing Wrexham to pick up where they left off against Bromley at Hayes Lane tomorrow.

Phil Parkinson’s men enjoyed a well-deserved free midweek following a gruelling period of fixtures when the Reds played on six out seven Tuesday nights and also had weekend matches.

Wrexham resume the National League automatic promotion push at Bromley holding a one point lead over Notts County with a game in hand.

It is the first of nine games remaining in the quest for a return to the Football League and O’Connell is ready for one big final push.

“It has been relentless for everyone,” said the centre-back.

“It has taken a big effort from everyone - staff and players - and we are obviously happy with the way it went but we are looking to push on now.

“It was nice to have a little bit of a rest and get a full week of training with everyone but we are looking to go again on Saturday.

“All focus is on Bromley and seeing what we can do there.”

Wrexham, unbeaten in 25 league games, will aim to extend the run with another win on the 4G pitch at Hayes Lane.

O’Connell, a January signing from League One side Charlton, is not used to playing competitive matches on artificial playing surfaces but the defender will take it in his stride in Kent.

“I have not played a game on one for a while but it is all part of it,” said the 27-year-old.

“I am just looking forward to it.

“We have got to go there, do our best and give a good account of ourselves, and hopefully get the result.”

O’Connell scored on his Wrexham debut in the 2-1 win at Altrincham on February 4 and made another three starts before sustaining an Achilles’ injury.

But the spell on the sidelines was shortlived and he has been back in the side for the last two games, helping Wrexham win 4-0 at Dagenham and Redbridge before beating Southend United 1-0 last Saturday.

“Injuries are the most frustrating thing in football,” said O’Connell.

“I did it quite early in the game at Aldershot but it wasn’t too bad and I was able to get back pretty quick.

“A couple of weeks and I was back into it.

“I am just delighted to be back in the team for the last two games; two very good wins so I am very happy.”

O’Connell was brought to The Racecourse after Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe picked up injuries.

Tunnicliffe has made his comeback while Hayden is closing in on a return and with Parkinson not short of centre-back options when everyone is fit, O’Connell knows the players cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

“There is great competition for places,” he said.

“That is a healthy thing and plays a big part in why we are where we are.

“Everyone is pushing each other and you have to be at it every game.

“We need to make sure we keep that going.”
