THE carrot was dangled and Jacob Mendy was delighted that Wrexham rose to the occasion against Dagenham and Redbridge.

National League leaders Wrexham, who conceded a late equaliser at Maidenhead United on Saturday and drew 2-2, faced the Daggers in their game in hand on title rivals Notts County.

Phil Parkinson’s men knew that victory would extend their lead over the Magpies to four points and the Reds responded by winning 4-0.

Mendy stressed the importance of picking up victory in the race for the title.

“Games like Saturday can happen but our mentality is always the same,” said the wing-back.

“We didn’t do bad on Saturday but we knew we needed a little reaction. We needed to secure three points at Dagenham and we started really well.

“We knew the chance we had if we won and it was a really convincing win; 4-0 and a clean sheet.

“Dagenham is a tough place to go but we knew what we wanted to do and what we wanted.”

Both Wrexham and Notts County have 10 games remaining and although the Reds have breathing space, Mendy is not getting carried away.

“That helps us, it gives us a bit of space," he said.

“But 10 games is still a lot of games.

“We have just got to keep doing what we have been doing.

“We know that we can’t take our foot off the gas, we just need to keep going.”

Mendy completed the scoring at Dagenham, bagging his third goal of the season.

“I am happy to get on the scoresheet to help the team and improve my stats,” he added.

“It was a perfectly weighted ball from Elliot Lee; the only thing I needed to do was just take a little touch and then the finish.”
