PHIL PARKINSON was pleased with his business after completing the signing of Ryan Barnett and extending Rob Lainton's stay at The Racecourse.

Versatile wide-man Barnett has joined the Reds from National League rivals Solihull Moors for an undisclosed fee, putting pen to paper on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Barnett, an unused substitute in Saturday's 3-1 home win over Dorking, has been brought in to compete with Anthony Forde in the right wing-back position after Bryce Hosannah sustained another injury and Reece Hall-Johnson asked for a loan move, and Parkinson feels he has a quality addition in the 23-year-old.

"We brought Ryan is because Bryce got injured, we were hopeful he would come back and unfortunately he hasn't but we can't wait for Bryce because there is such an important part of the season to come," said the Reds' boss.

"Reece has had a slight injury himself but he has asked me about going out on loan and I said if we brought in a replacement, we would be more than happy for Reece to go

"We felt we needed competition with Anthony in that position.

"Competition is important, we don't want to pick a team and think there is weaknesses anywhere.

"It has got to be a strong side and also have one eye on the bench where we feel we can change it to make a difference.

"Ryan is a talented player. He can go past people with the ball, he can get crosses in from very tight positions."

Lainton has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at Wrexham until the end of the 2023-24 campaign, with an appearance-related extension for a further season.

The 33-year-old has recovered from a career-threatening wrist injury sustained in the goalless draw at Bromley last March and made his first league appearance of the season in Tuesday's 2-0 win against Scunthorpe United, keeping his place for the Dorking win.

Parkinson is delighted to tie down Lainton who was Player of the Season in 2018/19 and is one of the longest-serving current players in the squad.

"We were concerned about Rob when he had that injury, to have him back is a huge bonus," said Parkinson.

"The medical team have worked so hard with him and Rob has worked hard himself.

"The owners here are very fair people, they recognise the work he has done and wanted to give him that piece of mind to know that he is here with us next year, so he can concentrate on what he has got to do from now until the end of the season."
