WREXHAM go into tomorrow’s game against York City sitting top of the National League and Luke Young wants to keep it that way.

Phil Parkinson’s side head to the The LNER Community Stadium holding a one point advantage over second placed Notts County.

The lead has changed hands over the last couple of months with both Wrexham and the Magpies enjoying stints at the summit.

The Reds are currently in pole position and captain Young has challenged his team-mates to stay there and try to pull away from their rivals.

“We have seen it already this season. We win a game, they draw and we go above them; we draw, they win and they go above us,” said Young.

“It is going to be like that a lot of the time between now and the end of the season.

“But hopefully we can be the team that starts to pull away a little bit and puts a little bit of daylight between us and the teams below us.

“That will stand us in good stead to hopefully kick on and take the lead going into the games going into the back end of the season.

“We are there and we have got to stay there so hopefully that starts with the result on Saturday, and see where we go from there.”

Saturday’s 4-1 FA Cup second round win against Farnborough extended Wrexham’s unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions.

The Reds’ are in good form - there is a third round trip to Championship side Coventry City to look forward to in the new year as well as a title race - but Young refuses to get carried away.

“There is momentum,” said Young.

“You want to win every game you play in, whether it is league, FA Cup, FA Trophy or a friendly.

“It keeps the momentum going and as long as we can keep doing that, keep chalking up the wins and getting points on the board, it is only going to put us in a good position.

“It is a game-by-game mentality, we are certainly in a good position with so many games unbeaten so as long as we can continue that form without getting carried away.

“We go into games confident but not think that we are have just got to turn up and win because it is not as easy as that; we are not that type of team and we have not got that mentality.

“We will go into every game with our feet on the ground and have that hard-working mentality, and our quality will then come through in the end.”

Wrexham continue the promotion push with two successive away games, with Parkinson’s men heading to Eastleigh next weekend after facing York tomorrow.

“We have got two tough away games coming up but we are sitting in a nice spot,” added Young.

“We are in a good position at the top of the table and we will go to York fully focussed to try and get the best result possible which will hopefully be three points.”
