JORDAN TUNNICLIFFE is still waiting for his first Wrexham goal but you won’t hear the centre-back complaining.

The 29-year-old, who arrived at The Racecourse from Crawley Town in the summer, has started the last nine games in the Reds’ defence.

While he has done his job at the back, helping Wrexham keep five clean sheets since being named in the side, Tunnicliffe is yet to score at the other end.

It is not for the want of trying, with Tunnicliffe twice going close in the 3-1 win at Scunthorpe a fortnight ago and only just heading over the bar from a corner in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Aldershot.

Tunnicliffe is looking forward to opening his account - Wrexham are the highest scorers in the division - but shut-outs come first.

“I scored seven goals altogether for Crawley,” said Tunnicliffe, who spent three seasons with the League Two outfit.

“Five came in one season so I do like to chip in with the odd goal.

“I had two cleared off the line at Scunthorpe and I was unlucky against Aldershot as well.

“Hopefully I can get my first goal but my main aim is to try and keep as many clean sheets as possible.

“If I do that, I believe in the rest of the lads to go and get the goals.”

Fellow centre-back Aaron Hayden had been a regular on the scoresheet this season, finding the back of the net nine times already.

“Aaron is scoring for fun at the minute,” said Tunnicliffe.

“It is an unbelievable record, I have never seen a return like that for a centre-half.

“He is a massive threat for the team so hopefully he continues that and I can get a few as well.

“But if Aaron keeps scoring, I am happy.”

Tunnicliffe found opportunities limited earlier in the season and only made one substitute appearance in the 1-1 draw at Yeovil on August 13 before he was handed his first start.

That was for the 3-2 FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay win against Blyth Spartans on October 18 and he hasn’t looked back, with Saturday’s victory against Aldershot extending Wrexham’s unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions and taking the Reds back to the top of the National League.

“I am pleased with how it is going,” said Tunnicliffe.

“I had to be patient and bide my time but it can chop and change through the season, we have got such a good squad.

“Anyone who comes in will do as good a job as the other player so I have just got to do my job when I am in the team, and other players will as well.”

Another clean sheet arrived against the Shots and Tunnicliffe says the shut-outs are down to a team effort.

“Clean sheet’s are always nice and it’s not just the back three,” said Tunnicliffe.

“It’s Mark Howard and the whole team; Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer up front, and Sam Dalby when he comes on, work hard for the team.

“Elliot Lee made some great tackles against Aldershot which summed up the whole team effort.

"Keeping clean sheets is a good base to work from to get the three points.”
