WREXHAM returned to the top of the National League after beating Aldershot Town 2-0 at The Racecourse.

Both goals came in the first half through leading scorer Paul Mullin's 17th strike of the season and James Jones' effort to extend the Reds' unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions and maintain the 100 per cent home record.

Phil Parkinson's side took over at the summit from Notts County who were held to a goalless draw by Yeovil.

Wrexham, who hold a one point lead, are back in action against Farnborough in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

Parkinson made two changes from the side that started the goalless draw with Wealdstone the previous weekend.

Bryce Hosannah replaced Liam McAlinden in the right wing-back position while Aaron Hayden, who missed his first league game of the campaign at Grosvenor Vale, returned to the defence in place of Tom O'Connor.

Wrexham bossed the opening exchanges and had the first chance in the ninth minute but Ollie Palmer headed over from Luke Young's corner.

Elliot Lee then tried his luck from outside the area but his curling effort was brilliant tipped behind by goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond.

James Jones failed to hit the target after the resulting corner was partially cleared and with Wrexham keeping the pressure on, they almost took the lead in spectacular fashion.

A long ball into the area was brilliantly taken down by Ben Tozer and his first time shot fell just wide with only Ashby-Hammond to beat.

However, Wrexham took the lead in the 28th minute.

Mullin beat his man for pace and advanced into the area where he dinked the ball past Ashby-Hammond for a brilliant finish from an acute angle.

Another chance quickly arrived as Jordan Tunnicliffe only just cleared the bar with a powerful header from Young's corner while Mullin went close with a shot when Tozer's long throw-in was cleared as far as the striker.

But Wrexham made it 2-0 after 38 minutes.

Aldershot failed to clear another dangerous throw-in from Tozer, the ball eventually came to Mullin whose shot was blocked but Jones converted from close range.

Well in control at the break, Wrexham went straight at the Shots when the second half began and Palmer fired over from inside the six yard box.

Mark Howard was finally called into action to make a comfortable save at the other end to deny Frank Vincent before the Wrexham goalkeeper atoned for his mistake by keeping out Tommy Willard's low drive.

Back came Wrexham and Ashby-Hammond pulled off a brilliant save to keep out Lee's effort after the midfielder got on the end of substitute Liam McAlinden's cross.

Vincent couldn't keep his shot down for the Shots while Wrexham captain Young was unable to find the net with a long range effort after Ashby-Hammond was caught off his line.

Mullin also saw a free-kick saved by the Shots keeper while a good Wrexham move ended with Lee's low drive well gathered by the stopper.

Inih Effiong hit the crossbar for Aldershot late on but Wrexham kept the clean sheet and secured another home win.
