WREXHAM put on a show in front of the live television cameras as Phil Parkinson's side beat Oldham Athletic 3-0 in the first round of the FA Cup.

Another sell-out crowd at The Racecourse and viewers tuning in from all around the world saw Wrexham produce arguably their best half of football this season in the opening period.

The Reds, playing some fantastic football, were well on top and led 2-0 at the break thanks to Sam Dalby's second goal of the season and top scorer Paul Mullin firing home his 14th of the campaign on his 28th birthday.

The gulf in class was huge and Wrexham, challenging for promotion as opposed to National League rivals Oldham who are battling to avoid relegation at the other end of the table, were in no mood to sit back when the second period got underway.

Mullin soon grabbed his 15th goal of 2022-23 and Wrexham, well in charge, continued to have the upper hand as the home side created more good chances.

But three goals proved to be enough as Wrexham comfortably saw off sorry Oldham to maintain the 100 per cent home record.

Victory put Wrexham into the second round and 90 minutes away from a possible dream tie again one of the Premier League giants.

Promotion might be the priority but Parkinson, who named a strong side, is taking the FA Cup seriously and he has a strong enough squad to compete on both fronts.

The Reds boss made three changes from the side that started Tuesday's 1-0 win against Maidenhead which kept Wrexham second in the National League, one point behind leaders Notts County.

Callum McFadzean replaced Bryce Hosannah in the left wing-back position while playmaker Elliot Lee came back in for Jordan Davies who was ruled out through injury.

The other change was in attack as Dalby took over from Ollie Palmer who sustained a head injury in the midweek victory and was named among the substitutes.

Wrexham made the early running and had an early chance when Lee played a superb back-heel into the path of Mullin and his effort was deflected over for a corner.

But the Reds took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Ben Tozer's throw-in was only cleared as far as Luke Young whose low drive was parried by keeper Jayson Leutwiler and Dalby was in hand to convert from close range.

Wrexham continued to go at Oldham and a brilliant move involving some superb passing ended with McFadzean's shot saved by Leutwiler.

However, the second goal arrived after 25 minutes.

Dalby laid the ball off to leading scorer Mullin who slotted past Leutwiler.

Wrexham, on the front foot, were playing some excellent football and keeping the pressure on Oldham but Parkinson was forced into a change on 35 minutes when Anthony Forde limped off injured and was replaced by Hosannah.

Young wasn't far away with a shot from outside the area and with Wrexham making good use of the ball, remained in control as they continued to get into some excellent positions.

It remained 2-0 at the break and the Reds had another sight of goal early in the second half but James Jones couldn't keep his shot down.

However, the Reds made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.

Ben Tozer's long throw-in was flicked on by an Oldham defender and Mullin headed into the back of the net.

Wrexham, hungry for more goals, kept probing and Lee saw his drive cleared off the line before another effort by the midfielder was blocked by a defender.

Mullin, looking for his hat-trick, saw a shot parried by Leutwiler while Parkinson made a double change after 71 minutes with Palmer and Tom O'Connor replacing Dalby and Lee.

It looked like the Reds should have been awarded a penalty when Hosannah appeared to have been brought down by ex-Wrexham midfielder John Rooney but it wasn't given.

Aaron Hayden headed over from Young's corner before another double substitution with youngster Kai Evans, coming on for his debut, and Liam McAlinden replacing Mullin and McFadzean.

O'Connor's shot was saved by Leutwiler who kept the score down but Wrexham cruised to victory.
