ON-LOAN Southend United striker Jake Hyde could not believe his goal was disallowed against parent club Wrexham on Saturday as the clash ended in a goalless draw.

Hyde, who is at Roots Hall for the 2022-23 season, appeared to have put the Shrimpers ahead midway through the second half.

But, having originally awarded a goal, referee Aaron Bannister disallowed the effort after consulting his assistant and Hyde was stunned to see the decision reversed.

“We are not here to talk about the officials but I haven’t seen anything like that in a 12 or 13 year career,” said Hyde.

“I’ve never seen a pause like that, I have never seen a goal given and then taken off about five minutes later. It is just unheard of.

“Our whole team has celebrated and gone back to the halfway line, and the opposing team talk to the referee and change his mind.”

Hyde made the temporary switch to Southend as part of the deal that saw frontman Sam Dalby join the Reds for an undisclosed fee.

Although he still holds Wrexham in high regard, the 32-year-old was determined to do well against his former team-mates and was disappointed the goal was ruled out.

“I’m gutted,” said Hyde.

“I have got a lot of respect for Wrexham, from the owners to the fans, the staff and the players.

“They are a brilliant bunch there and I have got a lot of respect for them but this is my football club now and this is who I play for.

“Even with the celebration, I will always celebrate scoring a goal, that is what I am here to do and that is what I want to do.

“I am absolutely gutted, of course I am, but it doesn’t mean we get down.

“Hopefully there will be one this season that shouldn’t have counted that counts.”

Southend were on top in the second half and Hyde was pleased with the performance against high-flying Wrexham who the frontman expects to go on and win the National League title.

“We’ve just got to build on this performance now,” said Hyde.

“The boys were brilliant from start to finish, we looked like we were going to score goals and against a top, top team who I fancy to go on and win it.

“It should have been all three points for us but it wasn’t so we go again.

“We can’t dwell on it or be upset.”

Loan players don’t often line-up against their parent club and Hyde added: “It is an unusual situation.

“We contacted the league and I got confirmation I was allowed to play on Friday and that was great for me.

“The player is left out of this so I was unaware but I would always want to play.

“I don’t want to miss any more football.”

Hyde was handed his first start since picking up a hamstring injury against Boreham Wood on the opening day of the season.

“I am very happy to be back on the pitch,” said Hyde.

“No professional player wants to be injured and it’s the hardest thing ever.

“Off the pitch everything changes for you so I am very happy to be back out there, and hopefully I start to build a little bit of fitness and a little bit of momentum, and help the team.

“I’m all good now and I’ll get better and better the more minutes I play so I am just looking forward to getting out there more often.”
