WREXHAM'S five game winning run came to an end after drawing 0-0 draw with Southend United at Roots Hall.

The Reds failed to clinch victory but extended the unbeaten record to six games and remain second in the National League, one point behind Chesterfield who came from behind to draw 2-2 at Yeovil.

Having performed so well in the brilliant midweek 4-1 win against Dagenham, it was no surprise to see Phil Parkinson name the same starting XI and he also had an unchanged substitutes bench.

Although Southend striker Marcus Dackers saw a ninth minute drive saved by Mark Howard, Wrexham enjoyed a good spell and Jordan Davies' low shot flew inches wide of the target.

James Jones' long range effort was well off the mark while Dan Mooney fired wide at the other end.

But Wrexham came close to breaking the deadlock after 28 minutes.

Howard's long clearance fell for Ollie Palmer whose shot was somehow turned over the bar by keeper Collin Andeng-Ndi but Southend were also having their moments and Gus Scott-Morriss headed wide from a corner.

Dackers had an even better chance for Southend but the striker fired straight at Howard following good work by Mooney, and it remained goalless at the break.

It was a quiet start to the second half with neither side taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

But Southend almost went ahead on the hour mark when Noor Husin picked out Jake Hyde, who is on loan at the Shrimpers from Wrexham, but the striker's effort was turned behind by Howard.

Southend soon had the ball in the back of the net when Hyde slotted home but the goal was eventually ruled out for offside after referee Aaron Bannister consulted his assistant.

There was another chance for the home side but Nathan Ralph headed over from close range while Wrexham responded with Aaron Hayden's header saved by Andeng-Ndi.

Neither side could break the deadlock and Wrexham drew a blank for just the second time in nine games this season.
