EX-WREXHAM defender Luke Waterfall stuck the boot in on his former club, scoring twice to send Grimsby Town through to the National League play-off final.

Mariners’ captain Waterfall headed home a 119th minute winner as Grimsby won an absorbing semi-final tie 5-4 at The Racecourse Ground.

Centre-back Waterfall signed for Wrexham in 2015, playing 14 times and scoring once during Kevin Wilkin’s reign.

He moved on to Lincoln City later that year helping The Imps to promotion back to the Football League.

Now he could repeat that feat with Grimsby and speaking just minutes after sending the 1,200 travelling fans wild at The Racecourse, Waterfall said: “It was they score one,we score one.

“We’ve come from behind so many times and it was all about staying strong. We’ve stuck together and had a never-say-die attitude.

“I’m so happy for the boys, the fans and everyone connected with the football club.

“Nobody fancied us to come here and win but we showed our fighting spirit on Monday and did it again.”

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst (pictured below) revealed he told his players to show up well in front of the cameras so they could play starring roles in Wrexham’s up-and-coming documentary.

“I said to the lads as we were leaving the hotel ‘make sure you’re looking good because you’ll be on the documentary if you do.’”

It was another last-gasp win for The Mariners, who scored two late goals to end Notts County’s play-off hopes last Monday.

“I don’t think my heart can take much more of this,” he added. “I’m drained. Very emotional - and that’s not me!

“There was so much drama. To then have that happen today after Monday.

“The players were outstanding. To go to extra-time, they were favourites and the lads put so much into Monday.

“I can’t speak highly enough of them and the people behind the scenes that help with recovery and getting them out there.

“I was almost pleading with the fourth official, my eyes were fixed intently on the referee. It was relief when that final whistle went.”

Former Wrexham captain Shaun Pearson played his part too, coming off the bench to play the last 30 minutes while Grimsby’s other ex-Wrexham player, Jordan Maguire-Drew - an unused substitute - tweeted: “Boys and the fans were class, onto Sunday now! One last push.”
