PHIL PARKINSON got his wish as the race for the National League title will go down to the wire.

Wrexham have taken over as leaders on goal difference after beating rivals Stockport County 3-0 in Sunday's top of the table clash at The Racecourse.

The Hatters, who would have clinched automatic promotion with victory in north Wales, host Torquay United in Wednesday's game in hand before completing their season at home to high-flying Halifax Town next weekend.

Wrexham, who are guaranteed a top-three finish, visit play-off hopefuls Dagenham and Redbridge on the same day and Parkinson is pleased his side are still in contention for the crown going into the last match.

"It was mission accomplished today," said Parkinson.

"We wanted to come into this game with something to play for, we have done it.

"We wanted to go into the last game of the season with something to play for and we now go to Dagenham ready to take care of our own business.

"We have secured a top three place and that is important.

"The aim is obviously to get the top spot, let's see what happens this week.

"If we don't get it we have got to be ready to go right to the wire in the play-offs and I believe we have got a group capable of doing that."

Wrexham have made up ground on Stockport over the last couple of months and Parkinson always felt his side could overhaul the long-time leaders.

"The bookies basically handed the title to Stockport but we believed we could claw back that deficit," added Parkinson.

"Obviously it needed Stockport to drop points, which they have done, and us to maintain our run.

"I am so pleased for the lads.

"When the big games come, the TV cameras are here and there's a lot on it, big players and experienced players have got to stand strong and I felt they did that today."
