JAMES JONES wants victory against Southend United at The Racecourse tomorrow to show Stockport County that Wrexham really mean business.

Phil Parkinson's side failed to capitalise on the leaders' slip-up against Yeovil on Saturday as the second placed Reds also lost 2-1 at Woking but they bounced back in style in midweek.

Wrexham won 6-1 against Weymouth and are now only four points behind their title-rivals going into this weekend's fixtures.

Jones is targeting three points at home to mid-table Southend to close the gap to one point before Stockport play host to Boreham Wood in the tea-time kick-off.

"If we keep putting the pressure on, stranger things have happened in football when it comes down to the crunch," said Jones.

"We have just got to look after ourselves.

"If we can get it down to one point by the time they kick-off, they will be looking at the table knowing we are coming for them."

Victory at Weymouth has guaranteed a play-off spot but Jones and his team-mates are still aiming for automatic promotion.

"I don't think any of the lads knew that was the case which shows where our thinking is at," said Jones.

"If it has to be the play-offs, it has to be, but there is still plenty of football left to play."

Wrexham struggled to get going against Weymouth who took a 20th minute lead.

But Parkinson's men really clicked in the second half and Jones praised the clinical finishing which clinched a comfortable win to keep the title hopes alive.

"We started a bit slow and they were right at it so credit to them," said Jones.

"But after that first 10 minutes I thought we were getting into it; we went behind but it was important we didn't panic and start chasing it like the gaffer said at half-time.

"It snowballs a bit (after scoring so early in the second half), the momentum changes in the game, suddenly our tails up are up and they were like 'oh, here we go'.

"It was important that we put teams to the sword when we are in that position because we don't want to be left to regret missed chances.

"We took our chances, the finishing was clinical and it was a convincing win in the end.

"It was important we put down a marker after Saturday's disappointment."

Jones has enjoyed a good run in the side and scored his seventh goal of the season at Weymouth, adding to strikes by the Reds' three leading scorers - Paul Mullin (2), Jordan Davies (2) and Ollie Palmer.

The 26-year-old believes Wrexham finding their shooting boots bodes well for the vital final four league games of the season.

"I have had a couple of chances, I hit the bar at Woking which was frustrating," added Jones.

"It was important we got the win first and foremost, but it was good to get back on the scoresheet.

"All the other lads scoring stands us in good stead at the back end of the season."
