DAN JARVIS would have had no qualms taking a penalty but the midfielder was relieved James Jones struck at the death so Wrexham avoided a shoot-out.

Jones scored the winner one minute from time as Phil Parkinson’s side triumphed 2-1 against Notts County at Meadow Lane to reach the FA Trophy semi-final.

Jarvis revealed that the Wrexham players practised penalties the day before the last eight tie and he would have been confident about the Reds’ chances if the game had to be decided on spot-kicks.

“I was dreading it but I don’t mind taking penalties,” said Jarvis. “Penalties are always quite fun.

“I know some people don’t like penalties but the adrenalin is kind of fun.

“It must be horrendous for the fans and my parents were in the stand as well so I wouldn’t want to put my poor mum through that!

“But absolutely I would have put myself forward for one.

“I would back myself from 12 yards out, as does everyone else at the club.

“We were doing penalties on Thursday and we all scored so if it had gone to a shoot-out we would have been confident; Christian Dibble was going to save some and we just had to do our job and put them away.”

County took the lead but Jarvis, recalled to the side after Parkinson opted to make changes, equalised in the 43rd minute with a powerful shot after Jones’ cross deflected into his path.

“It felt well coming off my foot,” said Jarvis.

“It is always nice when you don’t have to think about it and it is an instinct thing.

“I don’t think I could have caught it better and thankfully it has gone in the back of the net.”

An entertaining tie was decided in the closing stages when in-form midfielder Jones played a one-two with Reece Hall-Johnson and slotted home, scoring for the second game in a row.

The game would have gone straight to a penalty shoot-out if it remained level after 90 minutes but Wrexham, who have won their last seven games in all competitions, now have a semi-final home tie against National League title rivals Stockport County to look forward to on Saturday April 2.

“I think they were on top a little bit in the first half but we grew into the game, and we got control in the second half,” added Jarvis.

“The goal came at a good time just before half-time, it gave us a bit of momentum; when we came out in the second half we were flying and looked like we were going to go and win it.

“Then they had a little spell which they are going to do, it is a game of football, but we finished strongly.

“We were fitter, stronger, and towards the end of the game we pushed more.

“And one minute from time JJ does what he does and pops up with a bit of quality and puts it in the back of the net.”
