WREXHAM advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy with a 3-0 win against Boreham Wood at The Racecourse.

First half goals from Ollie Palmer and Jordan Davies, and Aaron Hayden's late strike, secured victory in the fifth round tie played in front of nearly 3,500 supporters.

Reds' boss Phil Parkinson, as he did in the two previous rounds, named a strong starting XI for the last 16 tie.

Left-back Callum McFadzean, who joined Wrexham from Crewe Alexandra during the January transfer window, was handed his debut while fellow new signing Tom O'Connor made his first Racecourse appearance in midfield.

O'Connor made his Reds bow the previous weekend in the 1-0 defeat and Jordan Davies returned to the side after missing out due to Covid-19, while Dan Jarvis was also handed a rare starting place in the number 10 role.

The Wood made more headway in the early exchanges without hurting Wrexham but Davies almost broke the deadlock with the first chance of the game, firing just over the bar with a powerful shot from outside the area.

However, Wrexham took the lead in the 19th minute.

McFadzean floated in a superb cross from the left and Ollie Palmer headed past goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond

Danllo Orgi had a goal disallowed for offside at the other end after Rob Lainton made his first save of the game but Wrexham made it 2-0 after 27 minutes.

Davies ran at goal and smashed the ball home from the edge of the area.

It was nearly 3-0 when Ben Tozer displayed a superb piece of skill and delivered a teasing cross which was headed against the outside of the post by Palmer.

Max Cleworth fired fractionally wide with the first chance of the 2nd half for Wrexham but the Wood went close to reducing the deficit after playing the ball into the area and Tyrone Marsh was unable to hit the target from close range.

There were few chances in the second half but Wrexham scored a third goal in added time with Hayden finding the net with a header from Reece Hall-Johnson's cross.

It was a job well done for Wrexham who resume the National League promotion challenge at Wealdstone on Saturday.
