LIAM MCALINDEN has made a big impact in a new role and he wants to make it a “really good week” by registering a third win in a row against Maidenhead United at The Racecourse tomorrow.

Normally a midfielder, McAlinden came on for injured wing-back Bryce Hosannah in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Yeovil and after impressing manager Phil Parkinson on the left, started Tuesday’s clash with Grimsby Town which Wrexham won 1-0.

Last in league action in the 2-0 home defeat to Yeovil on November 30 when he was shown a straight red card, a three-game suspension and illness meant McAlinden had to bide his time.

But the 28-year-old was determined to win his place back in the side - even if it is an unorthodox position.

“I didn’t see it as a red card but looking back, it was a challenge I didn’t need to make,” said McAlinden.

“I was gutted, all I have been trying to do is make amends since.

“It’s been a few months out of the squad so I have been working hard in training and putting in the shifts to try and get back in the team.

“I am just delighted to be back playing.

“Now I am back in, I will do my best to stay in and try to help the team.”

McAlinden’s late cross at Yeovil ended with Jordan Davies’ shot being turned into his own net by a defender for Wrexham’s winner and he also had a hand in Ollie Palmer’s debut strike which sealed all three points against Grimsby.

“I will play anywhere really that gets me on the pitch, and I am delighted with how the two games have gone,” said McAlinden.

“On a personal note, it is always pleasing to make a good impact.

“The cross at the weekend and on Tuesday I had the shot across goal which Ollie put in.

“You have your duties on opposite sides but when the ball comes to your side, you play like a winger.

“You try and get the ball at your feet and try and cross the ball early, especially for the strikers.

“They want early crosses and I just play the role to the best of my ability; I am enjoying it at the minute.”

Sixth placed Wrexham, just three points behind leaders Stockport, will aim to make it three wins in a week by beating lowly Maidenhead.

“It doesn’t matter who puts it in, we are just delighted with two big wins,” said McAlinden.

“We go into Saturday in really good form and hopefully we can make it a really good week and finish it off with three wins.

“It is really tight at the top but you start to see the gap forming from ninth down.

“We will just do what we can to keep churning out the wins.

“Since September-October time we have been in really good form, there have only been the odd losses here and there.

“If we can keep up this kind of form, I am sure we will be up there where we want to be come the end of the season.

“We have got a lot of home games coming up in the second half of the season - we have played a lot of away games - so if we can make this place really tough for people to come and we grind out wins, we will see where it takes us.
