HARRY LENNON can’t wait to welcome supporters back to matches - let alone experience bumper Racecourse crowds - because he hated playing in front of empty stands.

The 26-year-old centre-back has joined Wrexham on a one-year-deal, with the option of an extension, after leaving Southend United.

Although injuries restricted his appearances at Roots Hall, Lennon played some games last season when fans were unable to attend games because of the coronavirus pandemic and it is something that he definitely didn’t enjoy.

“When I played for Southend last season in front of no fans, it was not the same at all,” said Lennon, who can expect a big attendance when Wrexham kick-off a 14th season in non-league at home to Yeovil next Saturday.

“I don’t even think I would want to play football if it carried on like that!

“The fans are what gives you that buzz and adrenalin through a game, they drag you through it, so I can’t wait for that first game and seeing the turnout.

“I am sure it will be a great atmosphere.”

Wrexham have arranged their final pre-season friendly against Curzon Ashton at The Racecourse tomorrow (3pm kick-off) in front of season ticket holders.

Tickets to the game are free and available to season ticket holders via the new eTicketing site.

Lennon is looking forward to getting more minutes under his belt after recovering from a knee injury.

“It will be good to get a feel of the stadium and get some minutes ready for the first game,” said Lennon.

“I think there will be a good turnout with fans not being able to go there for 18 months.”

Lennon is excited to be part of a bright future at Wrexham who were taken over by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds earlier this year.

“The direction that the club wants to go was a massive selling point for me,” said Lennon.

“The club is going in the right direction and hopefully I can be part of an exciting future and get us climbing up the league.

“I think they can keep going - it is just getting out of this league which is not easy.

“With a couple more signings, I think we will be looking very strong so I am looking forward to the start to the season.”
