PHIL PARKINSON has not decided who he will appoint as captain but the Wrexham manager has been impressed with the leadership qualities of Jordan Davies.

Shaun Pearson was installed as skipper following his arrival at The Racecourse in the summer of 2018 but the centre-back turned down the offer of a new contract in favour of rejoining former club Grimsby Town.

Davies, who hails from Coedpoeth, was the latest player to don the captain's armband in Saturday's pre-season friendly, a 5-0 win over Tamworth when Wrexham supporters were present at a game for the first time since March 2020.

The 22-year-old midfielder returned to his hometown club last summer following a stint at Brighton and Hove Albion and finished the 2020-21 campaign in excellent form.

It is yet to be announced who will lead the side when Wrexham begin a 14th season in non-league with a home match against Yeovil on Saturday August 21 but Parkinson, still looking to bolster his squad ahead of the big kick-off, says Davies has impressed him.

"Me and (assistant manager) Steve Parkin are just weighing everything up," Parkinson said ahead of Wrexham's next pre-season outing away at Fleetwood today.

"We have had quite a few weeks training with the lads but seeing them in a game against opposition is different.

"We are just looking at everything and weighing up the best shape for us to play, players in different positions and who the leaders are in the group.

"Jordan is a terrific player, he is a real talent and a young player with potential leadership quality."
