WHEN it came to the crunch Wrexham were unable to rise to the occasion and were simply not good enough when it mattered most.

Dean Keates' side went into Saturday's final day showdown against Dagenham and Redbridge sitting sixth in the National League knowing that victory would guarantee a play-off place.

Five teams were battling it out for the remaining two spots but it all went wrong as the promotion dream came to an end at Victoria Road.

Wrexham's destiny was in their own hands but they never got going and the mid-table Daggers looked more like the side that had so much at stake and actually playing for something rather than just pride.

Dagenham scored early in the second half and when substitute Paul Rutherford was soon sent off, Wrexham had it all to do.

Jordan Ponticelli scored a late equaliser but a 1-1 draw was not enough to extend the season and Wrexham fell short when it really counted.

Here's how the players rated:

ROB LAINTON: Beaten once but didn't have a lot to do despite Dagenham dominating for large parts. 5

FIACRE KELLEHER: Wrexham's defence were kept busy and the Daggers goal went in off Kelleher. 5

SHAUN PEARSON: The Reds' captain put his body on the line and never gave up with so much at stake. 7

THEO VASSELL: It was tough going for the defence as Dagenham caused a lot of problems. 5

REECE HALL-JOHNSON: Was not the threat he can be until late in the match. 5

JAMES HORSFIELD: A surprise inclusion but the midfield was too deep first half and totally bypassed. 4

LUKE YOUNG: Has had another brilliant season but was very quiet on the final day. 5

JORDAN DAVIES: Unable to hit the big heights of recent weeks. 5

CAMERON GREEN: Like Hall-Johnson, he has been more effective recently. 5

JORDAN PONTICELLI: Scored last gasp goal to give Wrexham hope. 5

GOLD OMOTAYO: Never got into the game. 4

PAUL RUTHERFORD: Reckless challenge saw his dismissed. 2

DAN JARVIS: Lively when he came on and had hand in goal. 5

DIOR ANGUS: Made a bit of a difference. 4
