GOLD OMOTAYO has seen one promotion challenge come to an end this season but the striker is determined to make sure Wrexham remain on course for the play-offs.

The 27-year-old frontman began the 2020-21 campaign at Halifax but made the switch to Gloucester City during the January transfer window.

The Tigers were top of National League North when the season was null and voided due to the row over funding to help clubs survive during the coronavirus pandemic.

That left Omotayo a free agent and he has been brought in by Dean Keates to give the Reds’ boss more attacking options with top-scorer Kwame Thomas facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Jordan Ponticelli also out injured.

Wrexham’s push for a top-seven finish took a dent with three successive defeats before winning 4-0 at Halifax on Tuesday but Omotayo, who played at this level for Yeovil last season, is optimistic that the Reds can achieve their target.

“I started the season at Halifax and signed for Gloucester in the January window,” said the tall Swiss striker.

“It went well there. I scored on my debut and was in good form but then the season got cancelled unfortunately.

“When the opportunity with Wrexham came up, I did not think twice and I am very happy to be here.

“There are nine games to go and if I look at our squad, there is no doubt that we can get into the play-offs. There is enough quality.”

Omotayo made his Wrexham debut as a second half substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat against Stockport and he started at Halifax.

With just nine games remaining, Omotayo hopes to play his part by scoring goals but he says winning matches is all that matters at such a crucial stage in the season.

“Wrexham have ambitions to get in the play-offs and teams are always looking to strengthen their squad,” added Omotayo.

“With the injury to Kwame, the manager wanted to get somebody else in and I can bring something different to the table and help the squad.

“Every striker wants to score goals.

"I want to play games here but we as a club want to win games so it doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as we win.”
