JORDAN DAVIES believes Wales' talented young guns are not fazed by making the step-up to international football because they are playing regularly for their clubs.

Wales reached the 2016 European Championship but it was a new-look Dragons squad that helped clinch promotion to the Nations League top flight last year.

Young stars such as Harry Wilson, Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon have burst on the scene and Wrexham midfielder Davies, who hails from Coedpoeth - and is the only Welshman in Dean Keates’ current first team squad - believes the fact they are regular fixtures for their respective clubs bodes well when Wales begin their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in Belgium tonight.

"I think there is some good young talent in the Wales squad and they will be aiming to quality for the tournament," said Davies.

"The new generation are coming through and they are playing a lot of club football at a good level now.

"Playing regular club football makes the transition to international football a lot smoother.

"When you are playing consistently, you are ready for it and you are more focussed if you are playing week in, week out.

"It is tough going into an international fixture having not played for your club so that will help."

Davies believes there is also strength in depth in the squad.

"Wales have more than the 11 players that they used to have to pick from," said Davies.

"We used to have a good team but now with the young talent coming through, we have got a good squad together and are strong going into every game."

Davies hopes that Gareth Bale, on loan at Tottenham from Real Madrid, can continue the form he has shown in recent weeks.

"Gareth is obviously world class and hit a bit of form for Tottenham," said Davies. "Hopefully that can continue for Wales."

The second qualifier is at home to the Czech Republic next Tuesday and Davies sees that as a crucial game as Wales aim to secure a place in the finals in Qatar.

"Belgium are world class and they will be going for top spot," said Davies.

"I think we are playing for second spot and the home game against the Czech Republic is one you would like to win to give yourself the best chance of doing that.

"It is a tough start against two of the top teams in the group and it would be good to get a good start."
