WREXHAM head to Chesterfield tomorrow with Dean Keates urging his players to keep hitting the target when they shoot from distance.

The Reds’ boss was pleased with the amount of saves that Dover goalkeeper Yusuf Mersin had to make as Wrexham beat the Whites 3-1 last Saturday in their first game of 2021.

“We were glad to play our first game and get over the setback at Stockport,” said Keates.

“Watching the game back, there were some really good phases of play. We moved the ball quite well.

“Going back to the Torquay game, we had a lot of shots from distance and didn’t hit the target.

“We had a few shots from distance against Dover and the lads were a lot more consistent, we looked a threat and their keeper pulled off a few decent saves.

“If they are shooting from 20 yards out and there is a pass on, the minimum is the goalkeeper has to be making a save, and we hit the target a lot more times so that was pleasing.

“We made it 3-1 in the last minute, if it was 3-1 after 60 or 70 minutes then it looks a lot more comfortable than it was during the game but we deserved to score three goals, although we were disappointed with their goal.”

Keates is expecting a tough game against Chesterfield who were unbeaten in five games under new manager James Rowe to climb out of the relegation zone before losing their last league match against Solihull Moors.

“Since the new manager has gone in there they have had a massive upturn in results and are probably one of the in-form teams in the division,” added Keates.

“They lost their last league game with the last kick of the game and it is going to be a difficult game.

“There are no easy games in this division, whether you play top of the league or bottom of the league. You’ve got to earn the right to win a football match.”
