WREXHAM have nursed more than a few New Years Day hangovers throughout their history, so maybe it’s a good job they haven’t got a game this weekend.

The Reds have suffered badly, losing 20 of the 47 games they’ve played on January 1 over the years.

They’ve chalked up only 14 victories - the biggest a 5-0 win at home to Bradford City in 1949.

The Reds did beat Liverpool 4-2 during the war years, Gordon Bremner bagging a hat-trick, while their biggest wins of the modern era were both 4-0 successes.

In 1983, Bobby Roberts’ side kicked off the New Year in fine fashion with another Bremner, on-loan striker Kevin, scoring a debut goal at home to Reading. Simon Hunt, Robbie Savage and Dave Gregory (pictured right) finished off the job although The Royals gained revenge on the last day of the season, winning 1-0 to relegate The Reds to Division Four.

Almost 6,000 saw Mark Creighton, Jake Speight and Adrian Cieslewicz add to an earlier own goal as Andy Morrell’s Reds trounced Telford 4-0 in 2012 while 12 months ago, Devonte Redmond - remember him? - was joined on the scoresheet by on-loan Omari Patrick in a 2-0 victory at Chorley.

The victory over Telford ended a 20-year wait for a win on New Year’s Day. The last time the Reds had toasted success came at home to Mansfield in 1992 when Andy Thackeray, Gareth Owen and Karl Connolly scored in a 3-2 home win.

Three days later Wrexham beat Arsenal 2-1 in the one of the biggest ever shocks the FA Cup has ever seen.

A crowd of 2,442 watched thee Mansfield match. There were nearly 11,000 more paying customers for the Gunners’ game.

Wrexham’s biggest defeats have been at Burnley (5-2 in 1986), Bournemouth (4-0 in 1972) and Wigan Borough (6-0 in 1926).

The defeat at Burnley saw Phil Brignull score his only goal for The Reds while for those fans who may have found themselves nodding off after the excesses of the night before, they need not have worried. There have been nine 0-0 draws in those 47 matches.
