ELLIOTT DURRELL says having matches regularly postponed is not an excuse for Wrexham's poor form and the players need to do a lot better.

Dean Keates' side have seen a number of games called off this season because of coronavirus outbreaks in the Reds' camp as well as the ranks of the opposition.

The stop-start campaign has continued over the festive period with the double-header against Macclesfield Town being shelved after the Silkmen were wound-up in September.

"I don't think we can use that as an excuse," Durrell said after Wrexham produced a poor performance when losing 2-0 against Stockport on Monday in their first game for nine days.

"You can use it in your favour - you have got nine days to recharge the batteries - but ultimately it is not good enough for a football club of this stature.

"Everybody knows that there is a lot of pressure that comes with playing for this club but we have to look at ourselves.

"There is only us that can put it right and the players that are selected have to do better."

Wrexham don't play their first game of 2021 until Woking visit The Racecourse on Saturday January 9 and Durrell says it is up the players to make the most of the break.

"You can't hide away from the fact it is tough to get your momentum going," said Durrell.

"And when you do pick up a bit of momentum and then we have a break, we can't control that.

"But when it comes to games, we have to make sure that we work hard enough for each other and I just think at the moment we are steering away from that a little bit. I am not sure why.

"It is a tough place when results aren't going for you.

"You can either hide away or roll your sleeves up, and scrap and battle for each other, and that is what we have got to do."

Wrexham produced a woeful first half display against Stockport, conceding both goals in the opening 15 minutes, and Durrell knew it was always going to be difficult to get anything out of the game following that disastrous start.

"To give any team a 2-0 head-start, it is almost an impossible task," said Durrell.

"First 10 minutes of the second half we came out brightly and if Jordan Ponticelli takes that chance, I think it is a different game.

"It is fine margins and it is not good enough."

Durrell is disappointed Wrexham don't have a game this Saturday because of Macclesfield's demise so that they can try and right the wrongs from the Edgeley Park debacle.

"On the back of a defeat, you want to play the next game so you can put it right," added Durrell.

"It's not ideal that we have got another break but you can use it in one or two ways.

"You can use it to mope around or use it to roll your sleeves up, get back in training and work hard, and look to put another run together when we start again."
