DREWE BROUGHTON believes Wrexham can make a big impact and re-establish themselves in the Football League once the takeover at The Racecourse goes through.

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will become the new owners of the club and the duo have vowed to immediately invest £2million once they take control of the Reds.

And with that financial backing, journeyman striker Broughton, who was part of Brian Little's Wrexham squad that was relegated from League Two in 2008, says his former club can emulate Rushden and Diamonds.

Rushden, another of Broughton's many clubs, benefited from big investment and the 42-year-old says Wrexham can emulate their rise through the divisions.

"I played at Rushden and Diamonds when they were huge spenders," said much travelled frontman Broughton, who is now a Performance Coach.

"They jumped from well down the leagues into the Conference, League Two and League One.

"I think Rushden went second in League One after beating Leeds at home but the investment that it took to get there; that is the bottom line, it took a lot of investment.

"You just do it the right way. You do what the Cowley brothers did at Lincoln. They did a great job there so there are ways of doing it."

Getting out of the National League, where Wrexham are spending a 13th season, is the first aim and Broughton feels the takeover will give the Reds an excellent opportunity to finally clinch promotion from the fifth tier.

"The takeover, it is crazy," said Broughton. "I don't really know the ins and the outs of it all but great, modern football.

"I am sure that profile is going to do something for the club.

"You get a bit of momentum and the right people involved in the National League and you can get up.

"But it is not an easy league, it is a tough league to get out of."

Broughton was relegated from the Football League with Rushden in 2006 and suffered the same fate while at Boston 12 months later when the Pilgrims lost a winner-takes-all final day clash with Wrexham at a packed Racecourse.

And when he went down with the Reds in 2008, Broughton completed the dreaded hat-trick.

Broughton added: ""My abiding memory of being at Wrexham was Craig Bellamy, a good mate of mine who I grew up with at Norwich, saying to me: 'Oh no, you are there, you're the most relegated player in the history of the game. Whatever you do, don't be taking the only north Wales club down!'

"I look back fondly at my time there because I learned a lot from Brian Little but I was gutted the way it finished at Wrexham."
