TOP-level domestic football in Wales has been suspended amid the coronavirus crisis - but Wrexham's National League campaign will continue.

The decision has been made by National Sport Group (NSG) to stop top-level football in the country after its elite status was rescinded in a bid to to combat the pandemic.

Wales has entered a tier four lockdown and the Cymru Premier, North and South divisions and the Welsh Premier Women's League will be affected with elite status level rescinded for an indefinite time period.

Wrexham won't be affected and will be allowed to continue playing matches while a further decision will be made on the professional sides in the Cymru Premier.

The New Saints are fully professional, while title holders Connah's Quay Nomads, Bala Town and Haverfordwest also meet the criteria and continued playing during the 'firebreak' lockdown.

As a result of the decision, Connah's Quay Nomads' derby on Boxing Day against Flint Town United at Cae Y Castell has been called off.

A statement on the Nomads website read: "Our Boxing Day fixture with Flint Town United has been postponed.

"It is expected that further fixtures could also be postponed as a result of this update, however the JD Cymru Leagues will make a separate announcement as to whether any fixtures involving fully professional clubs can take place during this period.

"The NSG includes representation from Sport Wales, Welsh Sports Association, Welsh Government and Commonwealth Games Wales to consider the elite status designation.

"The decision by the NSG has been made in the context of the rapidly developing public health crisis here in Wales. The NSG has confirmed that the elite status designation will be automatically re-instated under lower Alert Levels."
