NECO WILLIAMS is set to play a key role in Liverpool's Premier League title defence and Champions League challenge.

Wales international Williams looks set to battle it out with the versatile James Milner for the right-back spot over the next month after Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered an injury against Manchester City.

Alexander-Arnold pulled up just after the hour mark against Pep Guardiola's City with Milner replacing him at full-back given Williams was not amongst the Liverpool substitutes.

But Williams, who hails from Cefn, is now surely set to be given a chance to impress Jurgen Klopp with Alexander-Arnold poised to miss Premier League matches against Leicester, Brighton and Wolves, as well as Champions League fixtures at Anfield versus Atalanta and Ajax.

Williams, who is in the Wales squad for this month's triple header with the United States, Republic of Ireland and Finland, was wanted by Wolves in the summer, but Liverpool rejected an approach.

The 19-year-old was wanted by Nuno Espirito Santo’s men as they discussed selling Diogo Jota to Liverpool and after Matt Doherty had departed Molineux for Tottenham, according to The Times.

Wolves also enquired about striker Rhian Brewster, who later signed a deal with Sheffield United.
