STEVE EVANS wants The New Saints to take advantage of other clubs' inactivity during the country's 'firebreak' lockdown by winning their Cymru Premier games.

Following the Welsh Government’s announcement, the ‘elite programme’ in Wales has been suspended during the forthcoming lockdown, scheduled from 6pm today until November 9.

Clubs - including league leaders TNS - that have sportspeople who work and earn a living through sport are allowed to continue playing behind closed doors.

New Saints' clash against Haverfordwest at Park Hall tomorrow is the only fixture going ahead this weekend and assistant manager Evans, who played for hometown club Wrexham and is a former Wales international, wants to make the most of it.

"We are two points clear at the top, if we win this game we go five clear level on games," said Evans.

"Ours is the only game this weekend and hopefully we have a few more games in this firebreak.

"And if we can get points on the board, it is for everybody else to play catch-up which we are comfortable with being top of the league."

TNS, who finished runners-up to champions Connah' Quay Nomads last season, began the current campaign with a seven-match winning run without conceding a goal.

"We have started the season really well," said Evans.

"We are committed and focussed on putting the wrongs of last season right.

"Everyone throughout the club has stepped up a level and they are performing.

"We are playing well and looking forward to each game.

"With what is going on with the pandemic, hopefully we will be able to continue."

The 100 per cent record was ended last weekend when TNS drew 2-2 with Aberystwyth but Evans admits it was hard to be critical of the players after such a brilliant start to the season.

"You build from the back but it is not just the defenders and the goalkeeper, it is the whole team," said Evans.

"We changed the way we play and all the lads have bought into it.

"They have been fantastic and it has been a great start to the season.

"Friday night was one of them games where we were disappointed with the goals conceded but hard to be disappointed with the players because they have done so well.

"It is up to us now to go on and produce another block of games where we play well and win games, and carry on moving forward at the top of the league."
