DEAN KEATES has been impressed with Jake Bickerstaff - and that means the Reds’ boss might not need to bring in another striker.

Keates is rebuilding his squad ahead of Wrexham’s 13th campaign in non-league and he has added to his attacking options by signing Jordan Ponticelli, Adi Yussuf and Kwame Thomas.

First year professional Bickerstaff is the fourth frontman in the ranks and the 18-year-old has caught the eye since the players returned for pre-season training.

Should Bickerstaff, who scored on his senior debut last September when Wrexham beat Ayr United on a penalty shoot-out in the Scottish Challenge Cup third round, continue to fulfill his potential before the new campaign kicks-off on October 3 then Keates is unlikely to sign any more strikers.

“I have got four options there with all four being a bit different,” said Keates.

“Kwame is a little bit different to JP and Adi.

“I have also got Jake who has done really well in the in-house games that we have had.

“We will see how he goes in the rest of the games and whether I need to buy one because I have already got one in.”

Keates has completed eight new signings this summer with Jamie Reckord, Elliot Durrell, Reece Hall-Johnson, Jordan Davies and Theo Vassell also arriving at The Racecourse.

With 20 players currently in the ranks, Keates has not finished yet in the transfer market and wants “a couple more” fresh faces.

“Everybody that we have gone after we have got so far,” said Keates. “Long may it continue.

“I want to add a couple more over the next week or so.

“I would like to do it as soon as we can; at least then we have got four and a half weeks left before the start date.

“As soon as we add them, the better for ourselves. We will have a chance to integrate them into the group and get everything nailed down.

“But we have got to make sure they are the right ones. It is not just about adding anybody.”

Shaun Pearson, Luke Young, Jay Harris, Rob Lainton, Devonte Redmond and Dan Jarvis were already under contract for the upcoming National League campaign, while Mark Carrington, Paul Rutherford, Christian Dibble and Dawid Szczepaniak have signed new deals.

Keates, who saw Max Cleworth also pen his first professional contract alongside Bickerstaff, will operate with a smaller squad in 2020-21 and he is close to his preferred total of players.

“We have got three goalkeepers so I will probably be looking at the early 20s mark in the squad,” said Keates. “I want quality over quantity depending on what the number is so we will see what is available and what we can bring in.”

With fewer bodies in the ranks, versatility will be key and the Reds’ boss has that with midfielder Durrell, a playmaker or winger who has returned to The Racecourse for a second spell.

“Elliott is versatile,” said Keates. “His quality is there; from open play, set-plays, he can play in little pockets, he will have assists and contribute with goals.

“Wherever he plays, I have no doubt he will just want to get on that pitch and show the fans all his capabilities.

“It isn’t going to be a massive squad this season so I need to have players that can change positions and be adaptable on the pitch. We have added a few versatile players who can rotate."
