THEO VASSELL can't wait to kick-start his career with Wrexham after signing a one-year deal at The Racecourse.

The 23-year-old centre-back was already kicking his heels on the sidelines when the 2019-20 season came to an abrupt end because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Vassell joined Macclesfield last summer and after leaving the club in January, was set to be re-united with his former Silkmen manager Sol Campbell at Southend United but the deal was unable to be completed because the Shrimpers were hit with a transfer embargo.

Having last played in November, Vassell, who has also featured for Chester, Gateshead and Port Vale, is looking forward to a fresh start with the Reds.

"Last season was very eventful, it was weird," said Vassell.

"I was at Macclesfield, I was flying and playing well, and I had a couple of bigger teams interested in me.

"I left in January and picked to go to Southend but I couldn't be registered officially because of the embargo which was frustrating.

"I couldn't play for a couple of months. I just trained and had to sit in the stands, and then Covid-19 came.

"I couldn't be furloughed because I wasn't registered and the chairman couldn't afford to pay me, so I had to leave and find another club.

"I left two clubs within two months. It was difficult but a lot of people have gone through things like this, some worse than others; no-one expected Covid-19 to come.

"I just want to play football now with Wrexham, I haven't played for ages. It has been very long."

Vassell joined Walsall in 2016 after leaving Oldham and he made 31 National League appearances on loan for Chester during the 2016-17 campaign, helping the Blues finish 19th in the standings.

Released by the Saddlers at the end of the season, Vassell signed a one-year deal with Gateshead and an impressive spell with The Heed led to the defender being snapped up by League Two outfit Port Vale in June 2018.

After one season at Vale Park, Vassell joined Macclesfield and he is pleased to sign for Wrexham following an eventful 2019-20.

"I am delighted to finally get it over the line," said Vassell.

"I was talking to Dean for a couple of weeks but I had a couple of clubs who had shown an interest in me going back to the end of May.

"At the time I didn't know what to do, I was seeing what was out there and I decided to come to Wrexham in the end."

Vassell is Reds' boss Dean Keates' sixth new signing of the summer, with Jamie Reckord, Elliott Durrell, Jordan Ponticelli, Reece Hall-Johnson and Jordan Davies already completing moves to The Racecourse.
