SIMPLY playing cricket this year means Mynydd Isa & Maeshafn won’t grumble about the hand they’ve been dealt.

The Flintshire-based club have been placed in Group D, which includes second teams from Bangor, Menai Bridge, Llandudno, Pwllheli, Mochdre, Conwy and Dolgellau, who head to the Argoed tomorrow afternoon.

But captain Andy Meakin knew a compromise between travelling and playing competitive cricket had to be made.

“Everyone has just seemed relieved to be playing and that goes for opposition too,” said Meakin. “The distancing and sanitising elements are just accepted and we all know what is expected so no problems from players to date.

“The group we ended up in was after a review and we know we had to trade off distance for parity of opposition. Travelling to away games may present a bit of a problem with issues over lift shares etc but no away games have been played yet.”

After Mynydd Isa folded, Maeshafn were left as the sole occupants of the Argoed Sports Ground, Meakin’s men on the lookout for new players as they keep the action going.

“The folding of Mynydd Isa was a concern at the time but we hadn’t integrated fully and after only a year we have found ourselves with a full team so far but we are always on the look out for more new players,” said Meakin, who led his side to a 14-run victory over Conwy Seconds last weekend after a narrow loss to Menai Bridge Seconds on August 1.

“The season so far has been well matched,” said Meakin. “Menai Bridge was a good game with one big hitting batsman the difference. Conwy had some pace but couldn’t get any big scores through the middle order to get over the line.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Dolgellau tomorrow and more of the same sorts of play as the last few weeks.”
