Penycae boasted a formidable 100 per cent record, smashing in 126 goals on their way to the U16s title, writes PHIL JONES.

Manager Dave Owen can feel rightfully proud of what his side have achieved with the vast majority of his squad starting out together as five-year-olds.

“We have had a fantastic end to youth football being unbeaten in the league for two seasons, which is not down to any individual player but to having a strong squad of 18 lads to win all our games scoring 126 goals and conceding only 11 shows the talent all 18 players have,” said Owen.

Many would argue it was a masterstroke wrapping up the signing of the impish Jack Honey and he did not disappoint weighing in with 31 goals.

On their shirt-tails were Ruthin Town who had a more than decent season losing just one game.

Writing the headlines at U15 level once again were Chirk Youth who had won all 14 games and again scoring goals galore.

Eight players hit the double-figures goal tally but as manager Leighton Edwards says: “Individuals don’t win you leagues, teams do. “

“Vinnie Cooke and Brandon Edwards have been really impressive up front, Luis Hughes has been a rock in defence and deserving the highest of praise was Joise Fernandes and we will hear more about him in the future,” added Edwards.

Their main challengers throughout the campaign have been Borras Park Albion were runners up, remaining undefeated with 12 wins and one draw from 13 starts.

In the U14s League, Borras Park Albion who were optimistic of going on to lift the silverware but by adopting the new league standing methodology, they shared the title with Corwen.

Both sides deserve the highest of praise and have set the highest of standards on and off the pitch.

Albion had a 100 per cent record winning 12 out of 12 games and Corwen recording 10 wins out of 10 and Borras boss Chris Davies said: “This year was always going to be a challenge following on from perfect league winners previously and it certainly was.

“Their talent and hard work has shone through becoming league winners once again.”

Corwen were certainly a match and were still in two cup semi-finals when the season ended.

Manager Ian Evans said: “It really was a team effort this season and all the boys have played their part in this success and really do deserve this reward for all the hard work.

“The form of Morgan Hodgson was quite incredible and deserves special mention after 27 goals and this was after missing several of our games. Everyone connected with Corwen FC are very proud of this group, the late great and club stalwart Huw Jones would be thrilled with this achievement.”

Borras Park Albion were declared the U13s League champions and delighted manager Steve Pritchard said: “We have gone through the season unbeaten which is an outstanding effort for any team.

“Our best result of the season was the 2-0 victory at home over Llay. The players knew after that victory that they had a great chance of winning the league.

“I wouldn’t like to single out any player out who has excelled this season as it’s been a collective effort by every member of the squad. However, to finish top you need players who can score goals and we are lucky to have ace predators Theo Williams and Callum Taylor.

“Lastly I would like to thank by coaching team of Craig Thomas and Jamie Durkin, the parents of the players who have braved every weather conditions possible to give their tremendous support to the team.”

Last season’s champions Gresford Athletic were pipped into second spot but did have nine games left to play.

Gresford boss Nathan Roberts said: “There are no sour grapes from us and Steve and his team deserve the credit they are getting but at the back of your mind is how things might have panned out had the pandemic not arrived.”

Due to the large number of sides competing at Under 12 level, the leagues had to be split into two and in the Red Division, Brickfield Rangers would have ended up as after 13 wins from 14 starts.

Manager Josh Owen said: “It was achieved with a great bunch of people and I am referring to all the players, three other coaches and parents that come to watch week in week out.

“We have achieved beyond what I expected especially with it being my first season with the team is fantastic. Leading goal scorer was our flying winger Tom Jones with 19 goals, Daniel Ryan bagged 15 and Vaughn Owen 12 goals.”

Gresford Athletic were runners up chalking up 10 wins in 12 starts with their management duo of Josh Leach and Sam Cross earning much praise for the part they play in their side’s success.

Rhosddu United ended up in pole position in the Green Division and manager Simon Durnell, with the help of ex-Chester, Shrewsbury and Crewe star Darren Moss said: “It was a bittersweet ending to a phenomenal season as were still in both cup competition and flying in the league.

“Top goal scorer Dewi Bailey was a leading light for us but all players in our small squad played their part in some great football motivated and led by our skipper Kyan Moss. The team spirit and belief was quite exceptional and something that I’ve not witnessed before in a team at this age of development.”

Chirk Youth lost just one in 11 games and that was enough to clinch runners-up spot.
