CORWEN FOOTBALL CLUB has been granted permission to build a new stand at their home ground - and it will be dedicated to a true club legend.

The ‘Huw Chick Jones Stand’, as it will be known, will be built at the War Memorial Park as part of the club’s efforts to meet the criteria set by the Football Association of Wales for teams looking to participate in Tier Two during the 2020/21 season.

Jones was a long-serving member of the club who died in February, aged 62.

A Denbighshire County councillor, Jones was known for his undying love for football and was even dubbed ‘Mr Corwen’, spending around 50 years with the club, going from playing as a junior at the club, to being a goalkeeper, a manager and finally president.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the football club and town as a whole, his beloved Corwen team has decided to dedicate its new stand to him.

Corwen chairman Martin Lyons commented: “It was the easiest decision we’ve made all year as a committee.

“I actually announced that we would be naming the stand after Chick during his memorial service. People clapped and cheered when the news broke and that’s a real measure of how people in this community viewed him.

“He was a lovely man and Corwen is already missing him dearly”.

Plans to erect the stand at the War Memorial Park ground were submitted around two months before the death of Mr Jones’ in February. Corwen Football Club were given official notice of the planning permission being granted by Denbighshire County Council on March 20.

Lyons said work to build the stand would start “as soon as possible following the coronavirus pandemic”.

In order to continue playing in Tier Two (Cymru North) next season, the club must have a 250-seater stand in place.

They currently have the Tudor Jones Stand - named after another club stalwart - which holds 100 spectators. But now, the additional Huw Chick Jones Stand will ensure the club can stay in the division it was promoted to last summer.
