CHIRK AAA will be hoping that lightning strikes twice after beating Newtown 2-0 to book a place in the Welsh Youth Cup final for the first time in 67 years.

Two goals from Toby Nash secured Chirk a meeting with The New Saints in the showpiece match on Sunday, April 26, the Colliers aiming to replicate their last final appearance by lifting the trophy for a second time.

Midfielder Sam Jones was named the man of the match after a dominant display, but it was hard to fault any of Chirk’s squad as they put manager Mark Holmes in jubilant mood at the final whistle.

“We were superb throughout the game, dominating from start to finish,” said Holmes. “There were some great individual performances but it was the teamwork that got us through. The majority of the squad have been together for years, coming through the ranks at Chirk Youth. Their bond is solid.

“When we decided to form an under 19 section at the club, its prime objective was to bring players through to our senior teams, a breeding ground if you like. Any silverware that comes along would be a bonus.

“We are hoping that the majority of this squad will commit to the club’s senior teams next season and help bring Chirk back to be one of the leading clubs in North Wales.”

The New Saints secured a final meeting with Chirk after defeating Barry Town United 2-0.

Malachai Balogun gave Saints the lead in first-half stoppage time, before Lewis Bloor added his side’s second just before the hour mark.

Saints’ coach Christian Seargeant is relishing the final clash with Chirk, saying: “That will be a good one, a nice local derby.

“There will be quite a few there and it will be a good occasion for the boys.”

On his side’s victory over Barry Town at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue, Seargeant was delighted to reach the final.

“I’m impressed with the boys, proud of them,” he said.

“They haven’t quite got the rub of the green in some of the games lately, but they were top, top drawer and played the conditions really well.”
