JAY HARRIS says keeping Wrexham in the National League would be a bigger achievement than winning promotion given the consequences of suffering relegation.

The Reds head into tomorrow's home clash against fellow strugglers Eastleigh sitting 18th in the table, just two points above the drop zone with 10 games to go.

It is not the position that Wrexham, beaten in the play-off eliminator by the Spitfires last season, wanted to be in with a return to the Football League being the sole objective.

And while Wrexham are no nearer to achieving that goal after 12 years in the fifth tier, Harris admits it would be an "absolute disaster" if the Reds were playing National League North football in 2020-21.

"It is different but we are playing for something," said Harris.

"We are playing to stay in the National League, we are playing for contracts, personal pride, playing for the fans and the management.

"It is probably bigger than the play-offs at the minute because we need to remain in the National League to build for next year because if we go down, we won't be building for next year.

"Yes, we all want to be at the top end of the table but it is massive that we stay here because it would be an absolute disaster if this club went down.

"First and foremost, get a result on Saturday, build on that, we remain in the league and build from there."

Harris, who made nearly 200 league appearances for Wrexham between 2010 and 2015, returned to the club for a second spell during the January transfer window.

Having enjoyed two successive promotions with Tranmere before a spell with troubled Macclesfield, Harris finds himself in an unfamiliar position with Wrexham.

But with six of the last 10 games at The Racecourse, the 32-year-old says supporters can play their part in helping Wrexham survive.

"When I was here first time around, we used to call it the fortress," said Harris.

"We were incredible at home and it is no coincidence with the fans behind you, you get that extra 5-10 per cent which makes a lot of difference.

"Against Eastleigh, we need a big crowd and a big performance especially; hopefully the two go hand-in-hand and we get the result.

"You have got to have the performance to get the crowd behind you.

"You have got to enjoy playing in front of crowds. It speaks for itself the amount of people who come through the gates and we have got to go and show them the performances that we can do, week in, week out."

Wrexham play some of the leading sides after facing 17th placed Eastleigh but Harris refuses to pay too much attention to the position of the opposition in the run-in and just wants wins to pull clear of trouble.

"It is an old cliche but we have just got to take one game at a time," added Harris.

"On the back of a defeat at Yeovil when we weren't at it performance-wise, we have got an opportunity to go and put that right against Eastleigh.

"It is irrelevant where people are placed.

"Teams are scrambling for their lives, teams are going for the play-offs and going for automatic promotion so you have just got to take it in your stride and whatever comes in front of you, that is what you have got to beat.

"Eastleigh are above us and we can go above them with a win so we need to hit the ground running."
