WREXHAM are still embroiled in a relegation battle but Shaun Pearson believes big strikes have been made in the second half of the season and the Reds' captain now wants to finish the job off.

The 2-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Ebbsfleet United on November 30 marked the halfway mark in the campaign when Wrexham dropped to a new low as Dean Keates' side found themselves bottom of the National League and five points adrift of safety.

Since then, the Reds have more than doubled their points tally and they still have 10 games remaining.

However, 18th placed Wrexham are only two points above the drop zone but Pearson believes just four more wins will guarantee safety.

"At the halfway stage of the season, if you'd said we would be in this position now then we would have taken it from where we were," said Pearson.

"It is a different group of players to what we had at the start of the season, and the environment and the feel of the place is much better.

"We just need to get three or four more wins to get safe.

"Obviously we hope to get more wins than that but I imagine four wins will almost guarantee you safety and first and foremost, that has to be our aim and our objective."

With six of the final 10 games at The Racecourse, starting with Saturday's visit of lowly Eastleigh, Pearson is looking to get those four wins at home.

"Our home form has been pretty good," said Pearson.

"Four wins is what we need and if we get four at home, the others are free-hits so to speak.

"Hopefully we can start by getting three points on Saturday and move on from there."

Although the showdown with 17th placed Eastleigh represents a good chance to get the first of those wins on the board, Pearson insists the teams battling for survival have shown they are just as capable as the promotion contenders.

"Obviously it is a big game because Eastleigh are around us but this league is that tight, 14 points from play-offs to relegation, and that shows you how little there is between the teams from the top end to the bottom end," said Pearson.

"I don't think it matters who you play, every game is going to be difficult within its own right and you have to try and get a result."

Wrexham failed to build on the 2-0 win against Bromley after suffering a 3-0 defeat at high-flying Yeovil on Saturday.

A Rob Lainton error gifted the Glovers the lead and Luke Wilkinson's stunning 25-yard free-kick made it 2-0 before a late third goal completed a comfortable win, but Pearson felt the scoreline didn't reflect the game.

"You take it game by game and try and pick up regular points," said Pearson. "I think in general our performances have been pretty good.

"It is such fine margins in this league and Saturday proved it.

"Everyone will say we were really good at Bromley and not very good at Yeovil but there wasn't a great deal between the two performances.

"We scored a counter-attack goal and soaked up pressure against Bromley, on Saturday we just didn't take our chances on the counter and the scoreline doesn't reflect the game.

"The goals we conceded, the first one will probably never happen again and I have never seen a centre-half in the Conference do that before for the second goal."
