IT’S been a frustrating season for Akil Wright and Wrexham but the midfielder hopes to play his part in the run-in and help the Reds retain their National League status.

Illness ruled Wright out of the opening four games of the campaign before the 23-year-old enjoyed a run in the side.

However, a hernia injury following Wrexham’s 2-0 win against Solihull Moors on December 7 meant Wright missed nine league games before making his comeback as a second half substitute in the 2-0 victory at Bromley 11 days ago.

Wright has only made 15 league appearances this term, with a further five outings coming in cup competitions, and he said: “It has been a frustrating season altogether.

“At the start of the season I was ill so I missed a few games and then I started to find my feet again.

“I got match fit and had a good run of games but then I got injured.

“It has been frustrating but I am back now so all I can do is just focus on the positives and that is try and be involved in the remaining 10 games.”

Wright was relieved surgery wasn’t needed after he finally admitted defeat in playing on with the injury, but he did not expect to be out for so long.

“I played with it for a while but after the Solihull game, the following week in training I just got to the point where I couldn’t run,” said Wright.

“I went for a scan and they said I had a hernia; I had to have injections but luckily I didn’t need an operation.

“I was out for about six weeks. I was supposed to be back earlier but it didn’t heel as quick as I thought it would.”

Wright was an unused substitute on Saturday as Wrexham suffered another blow to their hopes of avoiding relegation after losing 3-0 at high-flying Yeovil.

January transfer window signing Jay Harris, back at The Racecourse for a second spell, and Luke Young lined up in the centre of midfield.

Although Wright hopes to feature in the final 10 games, which starts with Saturday's clash against fellow strugglers Eastleigh at The Racecourse, you won't find him sulking if not selected by Dean Keates.

“The gaffer has brought in experience in Jay and there is Youngy who has been Player of the Season for me,” said Wright.

“He has got quality in depth in midfield.

“Hopefully I get a lot of game-time in the last 10 games but whether I am playing or not, three points is all that matters. I know the lads will give 100 per cent.

“Saturday was not the best result but with the position we are in, we have just got to focus on the next game and try and get three points.”

The bottom half of the table is heavily congested and Wrexham, who sit 17th, are just two points above the drop zone.

It is not the position Wright expected to be in after helping the Reds secure a play-off spot in 2018-19 for the first time in six years but staying up is all that matters.

“It is very tight,” added Wright, who joined Wrexham on loan from Fleetwood in the summer of 2017 following a successful trial and made the move permanent the following year.

“We didn’t want to be in this position but we are in it so we have just got to do everything we can to get out of it.

“When you are at Wrexham the main goal is promotion but we just need to make sure that come the end of April, we are not relegated. It is as simple as that.”
