DEESIDE Dragons scored four times late on in the final period to seal a comeback win over their fierce league rivals, Telford Tigers.

The visitors found themselves 3-1 up at the Den, and seemingly destined for their third win over the Dragons this season, with 11 minutes to go.

But cue two incredible spells from the hosts to grab the goals they needed to win the game in front of an adoring home crown in Deeside.

First, the Dragons scored twice in under a minute to draw themselves level going in to the last ten minutes, before taking the lead with three minutes to go and sealing the win with another in the dying seconds.

Speaking after the win that put an end to the Deeside’s five game losing streak, Dragons boss Gary Shaw said: “We played some of the best hockey that I’ve seen from the team all year.

“We played really well, and especially in the third period where we dominated the game all over the rink and that was great to watch.

“Things went our way against Telford with a couple of tactical changes and lucky breaks going our way, and it helped us go from strength to strength.

“Thankfully we got the all important next goal when we were 3-1 down, and from there we really controlled the game and ironed out our mistakes.”

Telford started the better of the two sides and eventually broke the deadlock at the end of the first period when Filip Supa eventually found a way past the Dragons netminder Sam Bolwell.

But the hosts responded soon after the restart as Andrew Chappell and James Shaw combined for the latter to equalise – his 17th goal of the season, but first in six games.

At the halfway point in the match, though, the Tigers regained their lead somewhat against the run of play.

As the Dragons peppered Zack Brown’s Telford net, Brodie Jesson broke through to put the Tigers ahead again before the same player doubled his side’s advantage five minutes later.

The game continued in a similar vein in the final period, with the home team on the front foot and pushing to get back into the game.

And they eventually did so when Matthew Wainwright slammed home the puck to make it 3-2 in the 50th minute before Chris Jones equalised less than a minute later after being found by his captain, James Parsons.

With the momentum with them, the Dragons continued to push forward and were rewarded for their efforts when a move involving Chris Keating and Simon Furnival ended with Parsons scoring his 23rd of the season to make it 4-3.

Radim Reznicek then sealed the victory by firing in Deeside’s fifth goal to complete a 5-3 win and end a recent hoodoo against the Telford Tigers.

The Flintshire club are now up to sixth in the Laidler Conference after leapfrogging the Telford side who previously occupied that position.

Elsewhere in the Laidler Conference over the weekend, Altrincham suffered a 4-3 home defeat to Widnes Wild before beating the same side 6-3 at their rink a day later.

Sheffield also hammered Blackburn Hawks Two in a 10-0 away win before returning home to secure a 4-3 overtime success against Bradford Bulldogs.
