IT might not be packed to the rafters and it’s certainly not Ally McCoist’s 50th birthday - but Leighton McIntosh is excited to be back at Ibrox.
Rewind to September 23, 2012 and McIntosh’s Montrose found themselves beaten 4-1 in-front of a 45,000-strong crowd at Ibrox as the home faithful celebrated then-boss McCoist’s forthcoming milestone.
“It was packed, I think it was the highest attendance in the UK,” recalled McIntosh. “It was electric. There was so much noise and we were struggling to hear each other, but there was a minutes silence and you could finally hear each other again.
“I think Rangers nearly scored and you could sense their fans itching to shout and grumble.”
McIntosh ranks Celtic’s Parkhead as the best ground he’s played at, but with Ibrox edging Hampden Park into third, the Wrexham striker is looking forward to the cup clash with Rangers Colts.
“It’s a good pitch, which will probably suit us,” said McIntosh. “It’s really good to be playing the game at Ibrox, which makes it a little bit more exciting. It’s good for the boys who haven’t been playing as well to get some minutes.”
McIntosh scored twice on a rare start for the Reds as they beat St Mirren Colts to reach the last eight. And 26-year-old is looking to impress boss Dean Keates if selected tomorrow.
“All I can do is try my best in these games and see what happens from there,” he added.
