HUW GRIFFITHS is confident Sunday’s trip to table topping Barry Town United will inspire Cefn Druids.

The Ancients’ promising start to the campaign has been curtailed by a run of four games without a win, the latest seeing Griffiths’ men held 3-3 at home by Carmarthen Town.

But Druids have drawn away at the likes of Newtown and Caernarfon, and given Connah’s Quay Nomads a run for their money in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

And Griffiths reckons the bigger the game, the better his team have performed this season.

“The boys know that we are playing a top team in Barry,” said Griffiths. “The boys know that they’ve got to be at it to get something from the game.

“When we’ve had the tag of favourites, like we did in home games against Aberystwyth and Carmarthen, we’ve not managed to produce a performance to win.

“Barry are the best team in the league at the moment, so we know it’s going to be really tough.

“They will fancy their chances against us, but we need to make sure that we look after ourselves.”

Griffiths has vowed to make changes for Sunday’s trip to Jenner Park after a below-par display against the Old Gold last weekend.

Hat-trick hero Ramirez Howarth misses the clash, but Griffiths could recall the likes of Arek Piskorski, Tyrone Ofori and Dean Rittenberg, while recent signings Mike Pritchard and Phil Mooney may feature if clearance is received and Joash Nembhard will make the trip if passed fit.

“We’ve got a big squad and changes will be made,” said Griffiths. “There are certain people who might find they aren’t playing because not enough of them played well enough last weekend.

“Some players might knock on my door, but I will be able to show them one or two things.”

With Cardiff Met and The New Saints playing out a 1-1 draw, Barry will head into this weekend’s round of fixtures on top of the table, although that could change by kick-off on Sunday.

Boss Gavin Chesterfield, who saw Barry ride their luck to win 1-0 at Airbus, is pleased with his side’s unbeaten start to the campaign, but knows that there is much more to come from his players.

“I’m delighted with the start, if the season ended now I’d be over the moon, but there is still a long way to go,” he said. “We’ve got another tough game against Druids to look forward to.

“I’m really happy with the lads and their application, but we are nowhere near hitting our straps, there is so much more to come.

“We are gradually getting better and gradually getting stronger.”

Barry captain Jordan Cotterill has been handed a six-month suspension for alleged aggressive conduct towards a match referee in a match against Penybont on August 16. Cotterill has until Wednesday to appeal the decision.
