SPECIAL OLYMPICS WREXHAM enjoyed a week to savour as they picked up 32 medals across two high-profile competitions.

Wrexham headed to the City of Birmingham regional open competition on Saturday, picking up 27 medals in the process, 12 of which were gold.

Megan Weetman and Greg Vickers were the stars of the show for Wrexham as they picked up three gold apiece.

Weetman pocketed first place in the 100m, shot put and long jump, while Vickers added standing long jump gold to his top spots in the 100m and shot put.

Jason Coles picked up two golds for Wrexham after taking first place in the 50m walk and the shot put, while Peter Loftus, Tony Gittins, Cai Williams and Dyfan Wynne completed the victories.

Loftus bagged gold in the 200m to go alongside his 100m silver and shot put bronze and Gittins claimed first place in the standing long jump alongside silver in the 100m and 200m.

Williams claimed gold in the 100m, as well as bronze in the 200m, which Wynne won before adding bronze in the 100m.

Adam Roberts came away with silver medals in the 200m and shot put and Chris Williams claimed 100m silver, while Billy Roberts and David Bellis pocketed three medals apiece.

Roberts took standing long jump silver and bronze in both the 100m and shot put, with Bellis taking second place in the soft ball throw and third spot in the 400m and 800m.

Gareth Hopwood narrowly missed out on a medal with fourth placed finishes in both the 100m and 200m.

That medal haul for Wrexham came seven days after the club picked up five at the Special Olympics regional swimming gala in Blackpool.

Despite the fierce competition, Gittins and Coles were able to win golds in the 50m breaststroke and 25m freestyle respectively.

Gittins added bronze medals in the 25m freestyle and 25m breaststroke, while Coles also came third in the 25m backstroke.

Vickers was unfortunate not to claim a medal as he finished fourth in the 25m and 50m freestyle races.
