TWO areas in Wrexham have been identified as coronavirus hotpots for the first time in months.

At the start of 2021, Wrexham had the highest infection rate in Wales with several areas identified as hotspots.

This week, two areas in the county have a rate of more than 100 covid cases per 100,000 members of the population.

They are:

  • Ruabon and Marchwiel - 105/100k
  • Bangor on Dee, Overton and Penley - 106/100k

However, 12 of the 18 sub areas in the county have the lowest rates since October 2020.

And for areas have had almost no cases at all, recording 0-2 cases which is the lowest rating.

They are:

  • Acton and Maesydre
  • Johnstown North and Rhostyllen
  • Llay South and Gwersyllt East
  • Rhos and Johnstown South

In the latest coronavirus recovery briefing, Wrexham Council commented: "Two of the 18 sub-areas of Wrexham are ‘hotspots’ with more than 100/100,000 population whereas last week there were none and there had been none for several months. However, many sub-areas continue to see no cases at all and numbers are relatively low."

The authority's key message is: "The spread of the Delta Variant in Wales and specifically in Wrexham continues to increase and our management of this 3rd Wave of infection is crucial. Current spread is primarily within younger people and it is of some comfort that hospital admissions remain low.

"Our message to families and individuals in Wrexham is that we encourage them all to become vaccinated, whether that be their first vaccine, or their second. Our progress out of this pandemic depends on achieving the greatest level of vaccination amongst our population so that further steps to recovery can be progressed."
