A JURY has retired to deliberate on its verdict in the murder trial of Barry Bagnall.

The jury, made up of eight men and four women, have been listening to evidence at Mold Crown Court since June 1.

Barry John Bagnall, of Trevenna Way in Caia Park, is accused of murder of 60-year-old Terry Edwards, who lived alone on the Pont Wen estate in Caia Park.

He was found dead on the evening of June 1, 2020, after being last seen alive three days earlier.

Judge Rhys Rowlands summarised the case and outlined the legal decisions they must consider when making their final decision.

Judge Rowlands said that the ‘sad but undisputable’ reality is that Terry Edwards has lost his life during the May Bank Holiday weekend in 2020.

He described the killing of Mr Edwards as ‘cold, cruel and cowardly’, who was found dead in his bedroom having sustained ‘catastrophic’ injuries to his brain.

The court has heard that these brutal injuries are believed to have been caused by a blunt weapon, like a hammer.

Judge Rowlands recapped all the evidence heard in court so far – including those closest to Mr Edwards and Bagnall.

They were also reminded of what they heard from the neighbours on Pont Wen who recall when Terry Edwards was last seen alive – and the moments after it is believed he died.

Evidence provided in court by a serving HMP Berwyn prisoner – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – was also recounted.

He alleges that Bagnall disclosed details of the crime to him that were not public knowledge and that he made his intentions clear that he was going to try and get away with it.

As well as this, the points raised by the forensic experts and senior police officers investigating the crime were re-reviewed.

The jury were also briefly walked through what the pathologist found when examining the body of Terry Edwards after murder inquiries were launched.

Bagnall’s own account of the evidence against him was re-examined by the judge.

The jury retired from the courtroom at around 3.30pm.

Having been unable to reach a decision before the end of the working day, they were sent home. The court will return on Friday morning.
