A YOUNG woman who was caught with class A drugs in a nightclub after she tried street dealing has been spared jail.

Bobbi Jennifer Leary, of no fixed abode, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Tuesday for sentence.

The 20-year-old had previously admitted that on December 7, 2019, she had in her possession a quantity of class A substances MDMA and Cocaine, as well as class B substance ketamine, with intent to supply it to another.

Jemma Gordon, prosecuting, said on the evening of the offence police attended a Wrexham nightclub after Leary - then aged 18 - had been detained with drugs.

She was searched and found to have 11 snap bags containing what appeared to be class A drugs, as well as cash and a phone - all of which were seized.

Forensic analysis confirmed the substances were cocaine, MDMA and ketamine worth between £370 and £420.

On the phone, experts found messages indicating she had been in contact with someone asking how she could go about selling drugs.

The conversation asked how to price substances and how the profit would be split, the court heard.

A drugs expert classified her offences as low level street dealing, Ms Gordon said.

Simon Rogers, defending, said: "She's genuinely remorseful and in my submission what she needs is a bit of help."

Judge David Hale referred to a pre-sentence report, explaining: "It is a very impressive report in one sense.

"It shows a young girl going off the rails. But it was hardly surprising, given the life she's had.

"Abandoned by her parents, fostered, hostels - it's remarkable she has found herself with the qualifications to get into university."

Turning to Leary, he added: "You were very silly.

"This was very low level but if you hadn't been caught, it might have become much more serious.

"You have really started to pull your life around.

"You decided to try the illicit life and now you have tried the hard working life - it's not much fun, most of the time.

"You're sofa surfing, working both at university and in employment, but you're making the effort and you are to be applauded for that."

Judge Hale handed Leary a 15 month detention in a young offenders' institute, but suspended it for two years.

Leary must pay a £149 victim surcharge and undertake 30 days of rehabilitation activity.
