MP for Wrexham

Although the Welsh Government’s Minister for Health and Social Care, Eluned Morgan, has ruled out an inquiry into healthcare services in Wrexham my healthcare campaign continues apace. Despite the Welsh Government’s position, I am still calling for an inquiry into healthcare services. Recent news, such as that about the failings in vascular services across Betsi Cadwaladr University health board, show that real changes need to take place across the region and a formal investigation and inquiry is the only way this can be done. On top of this, I am also calling for clinicians to be made central to the management of the health board and I am asking for a walk-in centre in Wrexham, which will alleviate pressure on GPs and A&E.

Following the recent news that the UK Government would be cracking down on the sharp practices of private car parking companies, I wrote to all those constituents that responded to my parking survey last year or had been in touch separately about parking in Wrexham. I am thrilled that there has been a positive response to the proposals, and I want to put on record once again my thanks to those that contributed to the parking survey – your contributions have helped shaped this policy! Nonetheless, there is always more to be done. I will continue to work with the UK Government Ministers to make sure these reforms are enacted swiftly and I will also continue to raise our community’s concerns in Parliament.

I have been particularly pleased by the recent news that the UK’s economic recovery from Covid-19 has been strong and rapid: we have had the strongest growth in the G7 at 7.5% in 2021, our unemployment continues to be low at 4.1% and the number of redundancies is at a record low. These figures are a testament to the hard work of the UK Government in making sure there are opportunities across the country as we exit the pandemic.

Here in Wrexham, I have seen first-hand some of the brilliant initiatives that the UK Government has put in place for restarting the economy. Last year, I visited Wrexham AFC where I heard about how they had utilised the ‘Kickstart Scheme’ to support young people into work. During the visit, the Secretary of State for Wales, the Minister for Welfare Delivery and I heard about the benefits of the scheme, and we were all very pleased to hear about the successes. Other businesses in Wrexham that have utilised the Kickstart Scheme have included Gatewen Training and Eternal Media – both places I have also visited with Ministers, which was an opportunity to showcase Wrexham’s talents.

The UK Government has also invested in Wrexham to make sure the infrastructure and services are there to support people back into work, the most obvious example of this is the brand-new Jobcentre in the town centre. These enlarged premises have helped many Wrexham residents get into work as the pandemic has subsided and the economy has reopened. More recently, in the Levelling Up announcement a few weeks ago, the UK Government made clear their intention to invest in a Ministry of Justice Hub in Wrexham, essential for levelling up, job creation and regional prosperity. I am very grateful for the Government’s commitment to Wrexham.
